J A Alcock & Son is run by a small and dedicated team of people working to ensure the highest customer service as well as supporting and passing on the combined knowledge to the next generation. Whilst only one member of the team works full time at J A Alcock & Son, the business would not be able to do everything that is required without the hard work and dedication of the volunteers that support it behind the scenes.
Ross Alcock FBHI
Ross is the only full time member of J A Alcock & Son and is a fully qualified clock repair and restorer with over 10 years professional experience in the horological industry, with an interested in horology and training stretching back over 20 years covering a wide part of the horological field.
Ross trained at the School of Jewellery in Birmingham as a horologist completing the professional BHI Examination in 2006 and has maintained his professional membership of the BHI ever since, something that he values highly. In late 2006 Ross started studying at the West Dean College to further his training and understanding of horology and to broaden his knowledge of the subject, on completion of this course he started working for Smith Of Derby as a Tower clock Engineer based at Derby.
As well as running J A Alcock & Son Ross is also involved with the British Horological Institute (BHI and has in the past served as a director of the institute. He now supports the BHI thorough the teaching of short courses to support their distance learning course and with the marking of parts of the examinations.
Ross is also the only specialist clock repairer on the BHI Accredited Register of professional and qualified members of the BHI in Nottinghamshire. Ross' professional qualifications include:
Ann
Ann is a retired teacher who brings many unique skills to her role within J A Alcock & Son. for most of the time Ann is working on the office side of the business doing the book keeping, millage lock and work record keeping.
However her skills as a teacher are put to use every time J A Alcock Son open to the public as part of the Welbeck Winter Weekend. The displays and exhibition work is designed and set out by Ann, having had over 30 years practice at displays in school Ann is able to ensure that the J A Alcock & Son displays are of the highest quality.
Chris
Chris has had an interest in horology for a number of years, in-fact it was his interest that inspired Ross.
Chris spends his time in the workshop doing the jobs that are not always clock repairing. This could be making display boards or tower clock trestles for up coming open events. He also helps move the workshop round when ever a new piece of machinery is purchased and needs to be located within the existing set up. When required Chris will also take on some clock repair work within the workshop.
Sammie
Sammie works for a logistics company else where in Nottinghamshire Monday to Friday, but supports J A Alcock & Son by proof reading things such as the website and reports. She is also responsible for the social media side of J A Alcock & Son and spends her time ensuring that the Facebook page has content that is of high quality and relevant to J A Alcock & Son.
Sammie also supports at open weekends behind the scenes ensuring that special invited guests receive the hospitality that they would expect and supplying the front of house team with copious amounts of tea.
Bryn
Bryn is the next generation of clock makers, currently still in full time education J A Alcock & Son are supporting him in his dream to be come a professional clock maker. He is currently working through the Distance Learning Course with the support of the George Daniel Education Trust along side his compulsory education.
As well as attending the workshop to work through the course Bryn also learns from Ross the business side of clock repair to give him a well rounded idea of what his future could hold.
Bryn supports with open days very often giving practical demonstrations to highlight what he has learnt and how he is progressing through his horological training.
Dill
Dill is head of security especially during working hours. Should you have an appointment to visit the workshop he will be the first member of the staff to great you.
Despite his bark and dedication in letting every one know you have arrived until another staff member joins him he is friendly and once you have been let in should you be happy to say hello he will be allowed to greet you in a much calmer manner.
