The Beginners Clock

A chance to build your own mechanical clock movement from scratch under the guide and tuition of an experienced clock maker.

Syllabus

Through the construction of a carefully designed clock movement the build a clock course will cover the following:

  • Use of a pantograph for manufacturing scaled blanks
  • Cutting of wheels and pinions
  • Planting clock trains
  • Setting up and manufacturing the anchor escapement
  • Manufacturing an alternative form of motion work

The course uses a pre designed hook and spike clock movement with daisy wheel motion work to allow a beginner with basic machining knowledge and hand skills to manufacture a working mechanical clock movement under the guidance of Ross Alcock MBHI in a one to one setting and highly equipped workshop.

Over the course of a week the student will take stock materials and craft them into the indervidual components that once assembled will form an elegant hook and spike wall clock movement for them to take home.

The aim of the course is to complete the movement only to a ticking stage within the week. With the skills learnt and the provided drawings the completion of the dial and hands can be done at home or on further short courses.

This course requires the student to have some knowledge of basic machining practices and principles as well as the ability to undertake basic practical machining as it is not possible to teach this and complete the project in the allocated time. If a student feels that they do not have these basic skills them please contact J A Alcock & Son for advice and perhaps look at the other short courses before attempting this one.
